Mix the Body is a concept between the British Council and Studio Wayne McGregor that gives anyone the opportunity to create a piece of contemporary dance. The online experience reflects how Wayne McGregor actually creates his unique work: choreography first, then building the music around it.

The renowned choreographer Wayne McGregor is celebrated for his boundary pushing experimentative approach and we had the opportunity to collaborate with him to merge the physical with the digital and bring the wonder of dance to a totally new online audience.

The gesture-driven user experience gives a sense of freedom when creating a dance, each hand movement is interpreted into a sequence of flowing movements to form a section which can be pieced together into a complete dance.

Trained with more than one hundred gestures the AI recognizes the orientation and direction of the hand gestures and translates them into the appropriate physical movements.

The timeline creates a visual log of the selected movements and allows for the dance to be shaped and edited. The final movement can then be paired with songs from artists that include Max Ricter and Jon Hopkins to take shape in an output film with everything pieced together.
